Chatham Vineyards spread of snacks and wine overlooking the vineyards

Feast on A South You Never Ate Coming in October

May 8, 2023

A South You Never Ate is returning to Chatham Vineyards on Church Creek on October 28, 2023.

The culinary event will feature Bernie Herman, who authored a cookbook by that name, along with 10  guest chefs and Chatham wine, of course! Bernie will read from his new book — title TBA — that will continue to explore the connection between food and storytelling on the Eastern Shore. Each chef will create a dish either highlighting Eastern Shore ingredients or reimagining a traditional recipe.

FEAST ON A SOUTH YOU NEVER ATE COMING IN OCTOBER

Bernie is a good friend of Chatham Vineyards vintners Jon and Mills Wehner. The chef is also an Eastern Shore icon and an expert on Southern culture. He currently serves as the George B. Tindall Distinguished Professor of Southern Studies and Folklore at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

For now, “A South You Never Ate” is back in stock at Chatham Vineyards’ retail shop. In addition to local recipes, it’s fun to read about the recollections, instructions and insights found throughout the 400 pages that celebrate the distinct flavors of the terroir and merroir of the Eastern Shore. Nearly all of the recipes are passed down through generations and all blend nicely with Bernie’s personal observations of life along the Shore through the eyes of watermen, oyster and clam farmers, church cooks, winegrowers like Jon and Mills and everyday residents.

Tickets are $150 per person and include an open bar and Eastern Shore of Virginia Foodways dinner and Bernie’s introduction to his second book.
